Self Reflection

1. So far, I feel like I am doing a P job. Although on my research checks I do go above and beyond, I feel like I have only done what has been required from me with everything else.

2. One thing that I feel that I've done well is my research checks. I feel like I have really learned many things about my topic and in the long run, for my two-hour, all this information will help me.

3. One thing that I would like to improve is getting everything that I need prepared on time. For example, my second interview.

Science Fair Proposal

1. If families live in a low income city, then they are more likely to be child abuse victims.

2. Dependent component is the number of abuse victims, the independent component manipulating the city's income levels, and the control would be the child abuse.

3. My EQ is what is the best way to treat a child that has been abused? For my experiment, I'm going to collect data from reported child abuse cases from different cities with different income averages, and find if income in a family has anything to do with child abuse. The way that they connect is that to treat a child you need to know where the most cases are reported, meaning that there are more children that need a therapist/psychologist in that area.

4. I will find some of my data in the Bureau of Economic Analysis, which will provide me with the different city income levels. The Bureau of Justice Statistics will provide me some of the information about the child abuse reports made and in what cities the reports were made. With this data, I will see if there is some kind of correlation between city income and the number of child abuse reports. This experiment will allow me to decide if there are certain cities that need more help with their child abuse victims.

5. This experiment would be under Behavioral Science.

What I've Learned So Far

1) What have you learned how to do since you started working on your senior project?
Since I started working on my senior project, I have learned a lot about the different types of child abuse that there are like physical, emotional, sexual and neglect. I've learned what they are, what are the requirements for these things to be considered "reportable" and some of the things that are done to punish the abuser. I have also learned about the different types of side effects that may come up like children growing up not knowing how to keep a healthy relationship with anyone, like living with guilt and stress disorders. I have also learned about how therapists and psychologists decide what kind of treatment the victim will get. For example, if they are younger children, between the ages of 4 and 13, they will most likely end up in some kind of group therapy. Another thing that I have learned is that to help someone else you first need to help yourself. So, you need to keep working on yourself and helping heal whatever "scars" you may have whenever you can.

2) Post evidence of this accomplishment.
To me, this picture represents that no matter how much research you do you will find contradicting answers, different definitions, and different ideas. The sticky notes on top of all of those other papers represent that you need to know how to manage your time because you will have lots of therapies, you also need to manage your personal schedule and anything that may come up. The very top sticky note means that therapists have a lot of decision making when it comes to children. You have to decide like whether they get group therapy or they get trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy or treatment (medicine).

3) What research helped you to do this and how?
My first interviewee, Ymasumac Maranon-Davis gave me a lot of the details about what therapists do. She have me an inside view on what she does, when she sets up therapies, when she has therapy herself and some of the decisions that she has to had made at one point or another and decisions that she has helped other people make. Another source that has helped me, A LOT, is a book called Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect by Cynthia Crosson-Tower. This book has a lot of information on what child abuse and neglect are, it also talks a lot about different treatments that may or may not be helpful in certain cases. Another thing that it talks about is how people react to abuse and what are some things that the abusers do. This is a really good book and I'm glad that I came across it, but unfortunately I haven't finished it so I don't know what the rest of the book is about, yet!

Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

1) For my independent component, I plan on working with someone I know who is starting a therapy and healing group for teens due to things that happened in their childhoods and I am thinking about helping her with that.

2) I think that this plan will meet the 30 hour minimum requirement because the class is scheduled to be from 6-8pm every Monday, maybe even more. With the classes themselves I get at least two hours per week but then we would still have to make the plans for what is going to happen and that is another two hours roughly. That would be at least four hours weekly, in eight weeks I should be done!

3) My EQ is: what is the best way to treat a child that has been abused? Therapy groups are one way of treating abuse. With this as my independent component, I will see and have a first-hand view on what a group therapy is like and in the end I will know if it works or not.

Defining the Essential Question

1. What is your EQ?
What is the best way to treat a child that has been abused?

2. Define the words in your EQ to make sure we are on the same page regarding what your EQ means.
         Best: most successful
Treat: to psychologically deal/work with a patient
Abused: any form of abuse whether it be emotional, physical, sexual or neglect

3. What are some possible answers to your EQ so far?
-By letting them talk about what they are feeling in an enclosed environment(one on one)
-By working with them in a group of children that have all lived the same or similar experiences
-By helping them join extracurricular activities to get their minds off of the things that had happened to them

4. What has been your most important source and why?  Be specific.  If it is a person, name them and what they do, if it is an article, book or video, name the title and author.
I truly believe that as of right now my most important source would be a book called Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect by Cynthia Crosson-Tower. This book has honestly helped me understand many things about child abuse and what it is, it has different statistics about child abuse and it also shows some ways that therapists work with abused children. This book has helped me and I'm more than sure that it will continue to help me.

Second Interview Questions

1. Where did you graduate from? What is your major?

2. What does your major have in relation to what you do here? In your opinion, is your major something necessary to work at a place like this?

3. Did you have any prior experience working or volunteering at a place like this or is this the only experience that you have?

4. How long have you worked here? What kinds of things do you do here?

5. Do you think that you make an impact by working here? If so, why? How?

Presentation Reflection

1.  In what way did the first interview affect your presentation?  Please explain, be specific and use an example.
Although, my research had a lot of information on what was considered to be abuse my interviewee also told me some things. She also told me about the "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" phrase and how it was actually the opposite! So, the way that it affected my presentation is that I got a lot of information from her and it helped me.

2.  What do you say stood out about your presentation performance and why?
I think that I gave information on what the different types of child abuse are and what they end up doing to the children in the long run, and I think that I had their attention.

3.  What was the most challenging to do and why?
I think that the most challenging thing to do was preparing myself for the presentation. In so little time I have learned so much about child abuse and I just wanted to share everything with my class but it was not possible.

  2. Short explanation on what child abuse is and what are the different types of it. (2 minutes)
  3. What do kids do after they are abused? (1.5 minutes)

Interview Check

I am planning on interviewing a family friend that has been in the psychological field for quite some time and has experience with child abuse and these kinds of situations. She has had lots of experience and I know that she is a very helpful person that would help answer any doubts that I might have. I plan on asking: How do you make these children trust you? Has there ever been a time when a child does not open themselves to you? What do you think is the most difficult part of this career? Do you recommend this career choice?

Blog 1: Senior Project Topic

My senior topic is Child Abuse. I chose this topic because I feel like it is something that most people have a general idea about what it is, but people still need a lot more information on it. Another reason why I chose it is because I want to be a psychologist for abused children and this will be a learning experience for me before I actually go into that field. With this year, I hope to learn a lot about what child abuse actually is, how to help it after it happens and how to prevent it. I want to help children that feel helpless, and make them feel like they are something valuable and make them realize that just because they went through something difficult at one point in time doesn't mean that they have to live with that burden for the rest of their lives. I also want to get an early understanding of what I will be doing in the future and make sure that it is something that it really is something that I want to do. I want this project to help me learn how to help!
